In the first five months of 2022, South Korea has emerged as the largest source of foreign tourists to Vietnam, accounting for 30 percent of total foreign arrivals. Popular tourist destinations such as Nha Trang, Danang, Hoi An, and Phu Quoc are particularly favored by South Korean visitors. In response to Vietnam reopening its borders to foreign tourists in March 2022, airlines have been competing to launch new direct air routes connecting cities like Busan and Daegu with popular Vietnamese cities such as Danang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi. South Korea became Vietnam’s largest source of foreign tourists last year with 770,000 arrivals. The presence of famous South Korean stars, such as actors Eugene, Lee Jun Ki, and Hyo Yeon, traveling to Vietnam has also contributed to promoting Vietnam’s tourism to South Korea. The Chief Representative of the Korean Tourism Organization in Vietnam, Lee Jae Hoon, emphasized the importance of Vietnam as a market for South Korea’s tourism and highlighted the active promotion of tourism activities in the Vietnamese market. By early June, South Korea had welcomed 163,000 tourists from Vietnam, achieving 73 percent of pre-pandemic levels in 2019. Vietnamese tourists also spent the most among international visitors to South Korea in 2022, with an average of nearly 200,000 KRW (USD 150) per capita in card transactions, according to BC Card, a credit card and financial service company. Tourism companies in Vietnam have adapted their offerings to cater to South Korean visitors, with HCM City-based TopTravel Company launching visa-free tour packages to new destinations such as Jeollanam-do and Jeollabuk-do via charter flights from Danang and Nha Trang. South Korea aims to attract approximately 400,000 Vietnamese tourists in 2023 through various tourism promotion activities in Vietnam.
