South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a Special Travel Warning Level 2, imposing a travel ban on specific areas in Cambodia. This measure, announced on October 16, advises South Korean citizens to withdraw from the affected regions and cancel any planned travel.
The travel ban applies to the entire Sihanoukville Province, encompassing Sihanoukville City and Koh Rong Island. It also includes Koh Kong Province, specifically Koh Kong City and its surrounding areas. The decision follows the killing of a South Korean student in Sihanoukville on October 14.
The ministry cited an increase in crime targeting foreigners in these Cambodian provinces as a key reason for the ban. It also noted the challenges faced by Cambodian authorities in controlling the crime rate in these regions. Cambodian police are currently investigating the student’s death, which was carried out by unidentified suspects.
Prior to this ban, South Korea had already advised its citizens to exercise “prudent” travel to Sihanoukville due to growing crime concerns. The new Special Travel Warning Level 2 is a more stringent response to the deteriorating security situation.
The travel ban is scheduled to remain in effect for 30 days. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it would consider implementing further travel bans or advisories based on ongoing assessments of the security situation in the specified Cambodian regions.
