Nepal is hoping to establish a direct air service between Myanmar’s capital, Yagun, and Bhairahawa’s Gautam Buddha International Airport (GBIA), with the aim of increasing tourism traffic to Lumbini, a Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal. Nepal’s tourism board held high-level talks with stakeholders, including the Nepali and Myanmar ambassadors to their respective countries and executives from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Lumbini Development Fund and the Myanmar National Airlines. All said they were positive about the possibility of a direct air link and discussions to establish it would go ahead, with necessary technical and commercial details being studied.
