The global business travel industry is expected to reach a forecasted $1.158 trillion in travel spending in 2023. One of the key developments in the industry is the New Distribution Capability (NDC), which offers a paradigm-shifting approach to airline retailing, access to fares, and travel buyers. However, 53% of travel buyers say airlines are rolling out NDC too quickly and have not given third-party intermediaries enough time to develop their technology and processes. A total of 803 industry professionals participated in the Q2 2023 Business Travel Outlook Poll, which explored the challenges and developments shaping the future of business travel, including rebuilding the industry workforce and improving employee travel experiences. Respondents believe hotels, travel management companies, and restaurants face the biggest staffing challenges. Buyers estimate that their current domestic and international business travel bookings have returned to 72% and 63%, respectively, of 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Business travelers commonly report concerns about travel disruptions, such as canceled or delayed flights, long security lines, and crowded airports, which affect their willingness to travel for work.
