India has a profound skill base that is being wasted due to a concentration of wealth and control of the banking system by a handful of large industrialists, according to author and economist Arundhati Roy. Roy highlights the example of Bellary, a town once home to a jeans production industry employing 500,000 people which now only employs 40,000. Such examples exist across India, with people who possess valuable skills being left unemployed. Roy argues that by aligning these skilled workers with technology and providing access to the banking system, these centres could create millions of jobs. However, the concentration of wealth and the dominance of large industrialists in the economy is hindering job creation and productivity. Roy believes there is a need for a more equitable distribution of wealth and power in India to support a productive vision for the country.
