Argentina has seen a significant increase in inflation, with the annual rate reaching 104.3% in March, the highest since 1991. The National Institute for Statistics and Census reported that inflation for the month came in at 7.7%, higher than previously forecast, and the overall inflation for the first three months of 2023 was 21.7%. Education costs were the highest contributor to the index increase, with a 29.1% month-on-month surge attributed to the start of the school year. Clothing, food and non-alcoholic beverages saw increases of 9.4% and 9.3% respectively due to rising costs of meat, dairy products and eggs. The avian flu in Argentina also led to a 25% increase in the price of chicken and eggs. The Argentinian government has attempted to contain inflation, but economic policy has been subject to divisions. In December, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved the latest round of a $44bn bailout package, providing $6bn to Argentina.
