The Khunjerab Pass, a major trade route between Pakistan and China, has been reopened after a three-year closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pass connects Gilgit-Baltistan of Pakistan with China’s Xinjiang region and was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. The reopening will boost local economies in Gilgit-Baltistan and increase bilateral trade between the two countries. Pakistani officials received a letter from the Chinese authorities regarding the reopening of the pass for trade, and port authorities on the Chinese side of the pass have been instructed to take all necessary Covid-19 measures. Trade and travel activities between the countries will operate between 1 April and 30 November. Reopening the border trade will help address job loss in Gilgit-Baltistan, where an estimated 70% of the population depended on border trade for their livelihood.
