Tourism in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province suffered a significant blow during Eid, with both local and foreign tourists avoiding northern regions. According to the Department of Tourism’s statistics, only 86,376 tourists visited the province’s tourist destinations during the three-day Eid period this year, with just 63 foreign tourists arriving between April 21 and 25. This figure is much lower than that of the previous year when 326,525 people visited six tourist destinations in the province. While many tourists cited inflation in the country as the reason behind the decline, the Department of Tourism’s spokesperson pointed out that weather conditions and transport costs were also major barriers to tourism during the Eid period. Additionally, the infrastructure of Swat was severely damaged due to floods last year, leading to a decline in tourism. Tourism is a crucial source of revenue for Pakistan, with the government declaring 2018 as the country’s “Year of Travel and Adventure.”
