The President of Pakistan China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Moazzam Ghurki, has praised the reopening of the Khunjerab Pass, which connects Gilgit Baltistan with China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous region and is a key trade route between Pakistan and China. The pass reopened after a closures of almost three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019, trade volume between China and Pakistan surged by nearly 47% to $856.3m, but due to the closure, the exchequer had suffered around PKR8bn ($49m) of revenue losses as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor-related shipments halted following the border closure. The Khunjerab Pass lies on the Karakoram Highway, which is part of the multibillion-dollar CPEC project and is an important link to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Trade at the pass is conducted through the newly-introduced Web-based One Customs system, making trade easier and aligning Sust dry port with all modern infrastructure in dry ports across the country. The reopening is expected to boost economic activities between the two countries, with China being an incredible support to Pakistan at all times.
