Qatar saw a significant increase in tourism in the first two months of 2023 thanks to the momentum created by the FIFA World Cup in 2022, with a 347% year-on-year increase in visitors, according to the country’s tourism body. Growth was strong across both Saudi Arabian and international visitors, increasing by 22% and 295% respectively. February was the busiest month for international arrivals, having been on a continuous high over the past decade. The country’s excellent safety record is also deemed to be a key factor in its appeal, with Qatar topping the Numbeo Crime Index for the world’s safest country for the fifth year running. With the goal of welcoming six to seven million visitors annually by 2030, Qatar has been investing in its infrastructure, tourist facilities, attractions and events, including sporting and cultural events as well as political forums. The accolade of Arab Tourism Capital has also been handed over to the city during an official ceremony with Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker at the helm.
