The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has highlighted the role of tourism in driving sustainable development at the United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries in Doha. With the sector accounting for between 7-10% of overall exports and links to multiple other industries, tourism is valuable as a national contributor and support to entrepreneurs, as demonstrated by the graduation of Small Island Developing States such as Cabo Verde, Maldives, Samoa and Vanuatu. Key issues at the conference included climate action, innovation, financing mechanisms, youth empowerment, education, digitalisation and capacity building. The role of partnerships, including the announcement of the UNWTO’s Tourism for Development Fund, was also emphasised. Qatar, which aims to triple visitor numbers by 2030, hosted a side event on “Harnessing Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Tourism as Tools for Sustainable Development in LDCs”.
