The Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) has announced that it welcomes LGBT+ tourists to the country, however, this announcement is at odds with the country’s traditional conservatism. Saudi Arabia has a history of discrimination against the gay community, and the government has even raided a shop selling rainbow-colored items, viewing them as promoting homosexuality. The Human Dignity Trust notes “consistent reports of discrimination and violence against LGBTQ people” and same-sex sexual activity between men and women is criminalized. The STA is likely trying to tap into the lucrative gay travel industry, where same-sex couples tend to spend more money in a destination than heterosexual couples. However, doubts remain as to whether same-sex couples can check into hotels without any issues. Ultimately, the decision to travel to Saudi Arabia as an LGBT+ person depends on the individual, but caution and awareness of customs is advised.
