The Saudi Arabian economy grew by 8.7% in 2022, surpassing international expectations and marking the highest GDP growth rate among G20 countries. The country is prioritising revamping its tourism landscape to diversify its economy and attract international visitors. To this end, the Saudi government has allocated $100m to the Tourism Development Fund in partnership with the World Bank, with the goal of welcoming up to 100 million visitors annually by 2030. The government aims to attract diverse groups of tourists to its giga-projects, including NEOM, The Red Sea Project, AlUla, and Diriyah. Modernising the transport infrastructure, expanding human resources, and digital expertise are also necessary to support the kingdom’s ambitious tourism goals. The launch of Riyadh Air, the new national carrier, and the region’s first luxury train, Dream of the Desert, are expected to add $20bn to the non-oil GDP growth of the kingdom and generate over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs. Major giga-projects, such as Qiddiya, NEOM, The Red Sea Project, and Diriyah, have been developed to deliver the goals of Vision 2030. The outlook for Saudi Arabia’s travel industry looks promising with significant investments being made throughout the country to enhance both religious and non-religious tourism.
