As part of its Community Social Legacy Programme, South African National Parks has awarded bursaries of over R2 million (€97 625) to 17 students from around the country living adjacent to national parks. The students come from six of the nine provinces in South Africa.
The programme aims to address a broad spectrum of community social needs. The scheme covers full tuition, accommodation, and a living allowance for the student whilst studying.
The Community Social Legacy Projects are funded from the 1% tourism income/levy (initiated in 2012) on all accommodation bookings and provide an opportunity for both SANParks and its guests to assist in the creation of legacy projects in the communities around the park.
The fields of study that were applied for include B.Sc. Biodiversity and Ecology; Bachelor of Environmental Sciences; Diploma in Sustainable Development; Diploma in Tourism Management; Diploma in Hospitality Management and Diploma in Business Management.
