Thailand’s Mu Ko Similan National Park, located 70 kilometers off the coast of the Phang Nga province, will soon close to tourists for environmental restoration. The Similan Islands are a popular destination due to their coral reefs, clear turquoise waters, unique rock formations, and tropical forests. The marine park will close on May 19 and reopen on October 15, 2023, after the monsoon season has allowed nature to recover from the high season’s tourism. During the Songkran Holidays from April 11-14, the park reported collecting entry fees of up to 1,005,050 baht from 2,869 tourists. The islands will reopen to tourists in 2023 with a maximum of 3,325 people allowed per day. The park is home to many marine life species, including manta rays, whale sharks, and humphead wrasses. Tourists can camp on three of the archipelago’s 11 islands, but there are no hotels or resorts.
