The Yörük people of southern Turkey have traditionally migrated up and down the Taurus Mountains with their livestock, spending summers grazing in the highlands and winters farming in the coastal plains. However, changing climate conditions have led to severe drought and wildfires that threaten their centuries-old way of life. In the summer of 2021, wildfires swept through Turkey, causing extensive damage to homes, livestock, and forests. Rotary clubs across Turkey launched an effort to provide aid to villages affected by the disaster, including supplying over 100 families with new goats and honeybees to replace those lost in the fires. The effort involved donations from local and international Rotary chapters, and highlights the importance of preserving cultural and social identities threatened by climate change. The Yörük people have faced significant challenges in the wake of the disaster, but the aid campaign provides a ray of hope and a path forward for those seeking to support traditional ways of life in the face of climate change.
