British tourists travelling to Turkey should take heed of local laws relating to the drinking of alcohol. Turkey’s rules regarding the sale and consumption of alcohol are different to the UK’s.
While Turkey doesn’t explicitly ban people from drinking alcohol in public spaces, it can still result in a fine in certain cases. ‘Disrupting the peace of others while intoxicated’ is a misdemeanour in Turkey and risks a 617 lira fine (the equivalent of around £15).
Last summer, authorities in Istanbul issued a public reminder about the existing rules regarding alcohol consumption in public. The governor referenced ‘incidents that disrupt public order and disturb the public peace and security’, in which the troublemakers were often drunk.
