UK tourists with holidays booked to Turkey are being reminded of an important rule that risks a hefty fine or even arrest if broken. It’s not uncommon for authorities in Turkey to carry out stop checks, particularly in busy areas, and visitors will be expected to provide evidence of their identity when asked.
Turkey has strict laws when it comes to carrying ID and it is illegal not to carry photographic identification. This rule applies to citizens and tourists alike. People who are unable to show their ID when asked by authorities risk a penalty such as a fine and can be arrested by police.
The UK Foreign Office advises travellers visiting Turkey to ‘always’ carry their passport on their person. Tourists spending less than 90 days in Turkey do not currently need a visa, however those staying for longer are also advised to carry a copy of their visa on them just in case.
