UK tourists who are planning to visit Turkey are being warned about a strict rule involving passports.
It’s not uncommon for authorities in Turkey to carry out stop checks, particularly in busy areas, and visitors will be expected to provide evidence of their identity when asked. Turkey has tough laws when it comes to carrying ID and it is illegal not to carry photographic identification.
This rule applies to citizens and tourists alike. People who are unable to show their ID when asked by authorities risk a penalty such as a fine and can be arrested by police.
The UK Foreign Office advises travellers visiting Turkey to ‘always’ carry their passport on their person. Tourists spending less than 90 days in Turkey do not currently need a visa, however those staying for longer are also advised to carry a copy of their visa just in case, reports BirminghamLive.
