When it comes to Dubai’s food scene, Arva Ahmed is an expert. Along with her sister, Farida, she co-founded Frying Pan Adventures—a food-tour company celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Since she moved to Dubai from nearby Sharjah in 1989, she’s experienced Dubai’s welcoming culture through food firsthand.
Ironically, when she came to the city nearly 35 years ago, she wasn’t especially interested in food. At the time, the city was populated largely by North Indian spots, mainstream Lebanese restaurants, and fast-food chains. She and her family ate primarily at home, except on Fridays, when it was a family ritual to dine out. “Food was not a big theme for me,” she says. “It was just not something I would think about.”
