Agricultural and rural tourism are being hailed as a new direction for Vietnam’s tourism industry, offering fresh opportunities for rural areas. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reports that Vietnam has over 1,300 tourist sites managed by local administrations, with 70% in rural areas. They are seen as a vital resource for developing rural areas, creating jobs and incomes for local people, promoting rural economic restructuring, and preserving traditional cultural values. The province of Ha Giang is one of the first to develop community-based cultural tourism models through investment in infrastructure, landscape transformation, and preservation of traditional cultural values. As a result, households in Lo Lo Chai village reduced poverty from 80% to 10%. Ben Tre city is another example of success in rural tourism, with tourism helping to create new jobs and boost production and trade. However, experts caution that more promotion, connection, and consulting activities are needed, along with supporting mechanisms and policies, to develop a tourism industry that brings economic and social value sustainably.
