Vietnamese airlines are being urged to boost their promotional programs to stimulate tourism demand as the industry faces challenges due to the pandemic’s impact on travel spending. The request was made by Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Doan Van Viet at a conference held in Nha Trang, where he stressed the need for enterprises in the aviation and tourism sectors to work together to provide sustainable solutions for both industries’ future development. According to Ha Van Sieu, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, aviation plays a critical role in Vietnam’s tourism industry, accounting for more than 80% of travel in 2019. As Vietnam’s key tourism markets remain closed, domestic tourists will continue to be a key driver of tourism recovery. However, high airfares have been identified as a key reason why Vietnam’s tourism is less competitive than other countries. Travel companies have called for local airlines to consider opening new routes and launching charter flights for routes without commercial flights, to diversify options and provide more affordable air tickets to attract tourists. The increase in airfares, particularly during the holiday season, has also negatively affected the pricing plans of travel agencies. To overcome these issues, experts have suggested the development of infrastructure and human resources, the strengthening of science and technology application in aviation-tourism development, and the promotion of international flight routes to Vietnam. The recovery of international air traffic is expected to take place this summer, with 52 foreign airlines and five Vietnamese ones currently operating 143 routes connecting Vietnam with 29 countries and territories. Nonetheless, the industry is still expected to face challenges in the coming years, and airlines and tour operators need to work together to develop specific products and promotional activities to boost both industries.
