Vietnam is a country where drinking is seen as a group activity, and it’s uncommon to see someone drinking alone. People will often invite others to drink a glass of beer, but visitors need not worry about being forced to drink. While some restaurants offer chilled beer, the majority of locals prefer to drink beer with ice, which dilutes the beer and allows them to drink more. The atmosphere in restaurants and beer shops is lively, with groups standing up and chanting before taking a drink. Tourists should pay attention to the phrase ‘One hundred percent’ which means they should finish all the beer in their cup, and when they can no longer drink, they need to say ‘Drunk’. Although drinking is not a competitive contest, people typically tally the number of bottles or cups consumed at the end of the drinking session.
