The Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA) has initiated a program to reduce plastic waste in the tourism industry, urging local governments to regulate tourism-related activities and implement eco-friendly and sustainable travel practices. VITA has partnered with the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment to launch a project in Hoi An Ancient City in the northern province of Ninh Binh and Gia Vien District in the central province of Quang Nam. The project has successfully created an ecosystem where everyone actively recycles and reduces plastic waste. The campaign includes regulations for waste management, and businesses are encouraged to switch to plastic alternatives to create sustainable value chains. VITA also launched a competition for the development of plastic waste management tools for the tourism industry. The Institute for Tourism Development Research (ITDR) warns that, without action, the amount of plastic waste thrown away by tourists in 2030 will be three times higher than in 2019, at around 336,400 tons per year. The seminar’s participants agreed that replicating the Hoi An and Gia Vien models in other destinations will help reduce plastic waste in tourism and contribute to promoting sustainable tourism development goals in Vietnam.
