Vietnam’s tourism industry is in dire need of 40,000 skilled workers to meet demand from rising tourist arrivals as recruitment has been challenging since the country reopened to tourism post-Covid. According to statistics from the municipal Department of Tourism, Ho Chi Minh City received 1.8 million foreign visitors in Q1 2021, indicating an increase of 36 times YoY. Despite this uplift, hospitality and travel businesses are struggling to find high-skilled personnel. Poor language skills, work attitudes, and limited foreign language skills are some of the biggest challenges that the industry faces. Experts are recommending that vocational training schools partner with tourism businesses to ensure an adequate supply of human resources for the sector. The HCMC is planning to organize Korean, Japanese, and Spanish language training courses for tour guides and workers in the tourism industry to improve their language skills. The city aims to receive five million international arrivals this year.
