Agricultural and rural tourism is a new direction that has been gaining traction in Vietnam, particularly in rural areas. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reports that there are over 1,300 tourist sites under the management of local administrations, with about 70% of them situated in rural areas. These sites are important resources that promote rural development and create jobs and incomes for people, in addition to preserving cultural values. The northern province of Ha Giang and the southern province of Ben Tre are among the localities that have begun developing rural tourism. Ha Giang has invested heavily in infrastructure, renovated the landscape, and regularly opens training courses to improve tourism skills for local people. Meanwhile, in Ben Tre city’s Nhon Thanh commune, homestay services have been available since 2008, and tourism is gradually becoming an important economic sector in the region. Despite the positive impacts of agricultural and rural tourism, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan warns that many models lack coherence and require greater collaboration and supporting mechanisms and policies to develop a sustainable tourism industry that brings both economic and social values.
