Vietnam has won its first gold medal at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32), an annual multi-sport event among 11 countries in the region, after two female chess players Pham Thanh Phuong Thao and Ton Nu Hong An won the Ouk Chaktrang women’s doubles event on May 2. The country currently sits at second place in the medal table, behind hosts Cambodia, with three gold, four silver, and one bronze. The games, held in Cambodia, will run until May 12, with athletes competing in 24 sports. Vietnam sent a 856-member delegation, the second-largest after Thailand, to compete in 40 out of the 51 disciplines. The country aims to finish in the top three in the overall medal table, with a target of 65-70 gold medals. The last SEA Games, held in Malaysia in 2017, saw Vietnam finish third overall with 58 golds.
