UN Tourism, in collaboration with the City of Almaty, recently hosted a regional workshop in Almaty, Kazakhstan, centered on empowering women in the tourism sector. This event also marked the launch of a new flagship program, ‘Women in Tourism Central Asia,’ designed to support women across the region within the industry.
The initiative highlights the commitment of both UN Tourism and Almaty to advancing gender equality and fostering inclusive, sustainable tourism development. The workshop provided a platform to acknowledge the significant contributions of women to the tourism sector and to discuss the challenges and opportunities they encounter.
A key outcome of the workshop was the official launch of the ‘Women in Tourism Central Asia’ program. This program aims to equip women with essential skills and entrepreneurial support to succeed in the tourism industry. Discussions during the event focused on sharing best practices and developing practical solutions to economically empower women through tourism.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili underscored Almaty’s position as a prominent tourism destination and its dedication to prioritizing women’s empowerment, noting tourism’s capacity to drive social transformation. Almaty Mayor Yerbolat Dossayev reaffirmed the city’s commitment to supporting women in business and ensuring their active involvement in the tourism sector, emphasizing that sustainable development is intrinsically linked to women’s empowerment.
The workshop fostered regional collaboration, drawing participation from representatives from various Central Asian countries, including Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. This broad engagement facilitated a comprehensive regional dialogue on advancing the roles of women in tourism.
