ChatGPT, an AI tool with over 100 million global users, was tested to help make sustainable lifestyle changes. The author gave the bot details about common transport modes and food in their cupboard. While ChatGPT was able to offer a long list of transport options, it acted more like a hyper-personalised search engine than a personal assistant. However, it was useful when it came to minimising food waste by suggesting recipes that included soon-to-be expired ingredients and offering couscous alternatives when the author didn’t have it on hand. Despite the usefulness of ChatGPT, it ultimately relies on user motivation for sustainable behaviour change. Nonetheless, the bot is a meticulous record keeper and could efficiently organise ingredients in a domestic kitchen. Overall, ChatGPT could be useful for basic questions like storing onions but struggled with more subjective queries.
