Expedia Group has launched a new generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, to simplify travel planning through its OTA platform. Developed in collaboration with OpenAI, ChatGPT is powered by Expedia’s 70 petabytes of travel data and can perform standalone functions like finding suitable flights, accommodations, activities and more, as well as helping users book their trips in an integrated way. Once a traveler maps out their ideal trip itinerary through a virtual conversation with the plugin, they can access their member rewards and discounts before booking. According to Expedia Group, the AI innovation will transform the company “from an online travel agency to a technology platform powering travel at every step of the journey for 154M+ travelers and 50K+ partners globally”. The technology’s capabilities include trip planning/shopping, booking, post-booking, fraud prevention, and personalized service.
