Here’s what has been happening today:
- NSW cracked the thousand mark for new local COVID-19 cases, but the Premier is ploughing ahead with plans to ease restrictions
- The UK said there was a “very, very credible” threat of terrorist attack at the Kabul airport
- And Qantas hinted at the countries it hoped it would be flying to by the end of the year
Let’s rip the lid off this thing.
NSW recorded 1,029 new local COVID-19 cases
That’s the highest daily number in any state or territory since the start of the pandemic.
Another three deaths were recorded overnight, the youngest person being a man in his 30s.
All three men were unvaccinated and died at home.
Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said the men’s deaths were being investigated by the health service “to look at any learnings”.
“If you’ve got any change in your breathing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, or your condition is deteriorating, do not hesitate — although our system is clearly under stress — the best thing you can do is present early for care.”
At least eight people have died at home from COVID-19 during this current NSW outbreak.
… but the Premier announced the easing of restrictions today
They won’t come into effect until 12:01am AEST Monday, September 13, mind you.
They’re broken into two groups:
- People who live outside the local government areas (LGAs) of concern: Outdoor gatherings of up to five people (including children, all adults must be vaccinated) will be allowed in a person’s LGA or within 5km from home
- People who live in the LGAs of concern: Households with all adults vaccinated will be able to gather outdoors for recreation (including picnics) within the existing rules (for one hour only, outside curfew hours and within 5km of home). This is in addition to the one hour allowed for exercise
… and they only apply to people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
