Around 35 years ago, the South Carolina Beachfront Management Act established a framework for managing the state’s beaches to withstand ongoing coastal erosion and storms.
It was and remains a superb piece of bipartisan legislation. The act recognized that sea walls harm beaches and impact neighboring properties. It also recognized that beaches and dunes warrant protection because they provide a public amenity as well as excellent protection for the infrastructure behind them.
