Just ask Marion Rose, owner of Elgin Travel and Cruises in St. Thomas. A 33-year veteran of the industry, she’s had to lay off her staff of seven specialized agents, some of whom have been with her for decades.
After agents booked dozens of groups, mostly for weddings, last year and then re-booked them, the federal government’s latest ban on winter flights to sunspots meant agents had to cancel their groups for a second or even a third time.
“That is the devastating part for our agents, who have worked for over two years on these groups, touched the files hundreds of times, with absolutely zero income because we do not get paid until clients travel,” Rose said.
