American Airlines recently found themselves in a bit of a digital blunder after posting an the wrong photo of Cape Cod on their website, misidentifying a landmark and accompanying it with a grammatical oversight.
Here’s the short story: The airline mistakenly depicted Portland Head Light, a famous lighthouse in Portland, Maine, while advertising Cape Cod. To top it off, they also overlooked a grammatical error in the accompanying text, that caught the attention of local Cape Cod Redditors.
The mishap came to light thanks to the keen eye of a Reddit user, iBarbo, who spotted the mistake. American Airlines had intended to promote new flights servicing Hyannis, Massachusetts (HYA), a popular destination on Cape Cod. However, instead of featuring an image of Cape Cod, they accidentally showcased Portland Head Light, a beautiful beacon located in a different state altogether.
While it’s unsure when, American Airlines did indeed notice and replaced the misidentified image with a more suitable depiction of Cape Cod. However, while fixing one error, another oversight slipped through the cracks.
The grammatical error was evident in the text overlaying the image, which read, “Relax in Cape Cod this summer.” While the sentiment was clear, the word “in” was incorrect, as Cape Cod is a geographic location typically associated with the word “on.” A minor detail perhaps, but one that did not escape the sharp eagle-eyed Cape Codders.
At the end of the day, Cape Cod is a gorgeous destination and the purpose of this article is to not shame American Airlines, but to simply bring to their attention the local grammatical lingo the SouthCoast and the good people of Cape Cod use. It’s just an interesting blunder. Nothing more, nothing less.
