Emirates airline is committing $200m towards a research fund aimed at reducing the impact of fossil fuels in commercial aviation. The initiative will focus on investment in biofuels, among other areas. Earlier this month, Etihad Airways partnered with Dutch firm Corendon Dutch Airlines, with both pledging to lower emissions through the development of “pragmatic achievable targets”. In December, Virgin Atlantic flew a 747 from Orlando to London using fuel partly derived from waste gases transformed into liquid. The two-day flight was said to have produced half the carbon footprint of a typical trip.
