Emirates and FlyDubai, the two major airlines based in Dubai, have a close partnership but have not yet merged despite being owned by the government of Dubai and having the same goal of connecting the world to and through Dubai. While there are benefits to the airlines operating independently, there are also numerous advantages to merging, such as centralizing management positions and marketing efforts, improved efficiency and utilization of the fleet, and eliminating consumer confusion. The airlines have been slowly working towards closer cooperation, but the pandemic may have slowed down the process. One theory is that Emirates may be worried about providing a seamless experience at Dubai International Airport, where the airlines operate out of different terminals, while another possibility is that pride or politics may be at play. Overall, a merger would greatly expand Emirates’ network and connectivity, particularly in light of the airline’s plans to add a fifth aircraft type.
