A flight from Manchester to Greece had to be aborted in midair due to an error which meant the aircraft failed to pressurize, an investigation has revealed.
The TUI airways plane with 193 people on board was en route to Kos, Greece in October 2023, before the pilot was forced to return to Manchester as the aircraft flew over Lincolnshire in eastern England.
A report by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch found that engineers failed to turn switches that regulate the air pressure inside the plane back on after completing maintenance on the air conditioning system.
The error was not detected by the crew or the pilots before takeoff.
The report said it was likely those on board “were exposed to a progressive hypoxia risk.”
Hypoxia occurs when the body or a part of it does not have enough oxygen. It can happen on a plane if there is a loss of cabin pressure.
No injuries were reported.
