Stretching 396 meters (1,299 feet) tall, this monolith was named a UNESCO historic site. It became famous when its tramway was installed in 1912, which was only the third in the world! Riding the tramway up to the top is still one of the most popular ways to visit Sugarloaf Mountain today. 

The mountain was named Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain) because it resembles a sugarloaf. A sugarloaf is when sugarcane is refined into a cone-like shape, similar to the shape of the mountain! It received its name when Brazil was well known for its sugarcane exports.
