Korea’s health tourism industry is experiencing a resurgence after opening its borders to foreign visitors following the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ministry of Health and Welfare revealed that 248,110 foreign patients arrived in 2020, a 70% increase from the previous year. However, this is still only half the number of visitors the country saw in 2019 at 497,000. Japanese visitors made up the largest increase, rising 6.6 times to 21,757 last year, primarily for plastic surgery and skincare. American patients made up the largest percentage at 44,095, followed closely by Chinese patients at 43,923. The popularity of Korean pop culture and the ability to enter Korea without a visa have fueled Japanese interest in health tourism in the country.
