As the fear of COVID-19 eases, South Korea is expected to see an increase in international travel with the figure estimated to surpass 10 million in the second quarter. In the January-to-March period, 9 million Koreans traveled overseas, a 62 percent increase from the same period in 2019, before the pandemic. This recovery is mainly due to Koreans’ growing demand for international travel after three years of restrictions. Interpark, the booking platform, reported that sales of international flight tickets booked on its website amounted to 161.3 billion won in March, a jump of 281 percent from the previous month and a 48 percent increase from 108.8 billion won in March 2019. The top destinations among the booked flights included Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Taiwan. However, ticket prices of flights remain high because of staggered supply and several other causes, including inflation, high oil prices, personnel shortage in the aviation industry, and Russia’s airspace closure. The Korea Civil Aviation Association estimates the cost of air travel between Asia and Europe and North America will rise even more by 14.5 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, this year compared to last year.
