South Korea has waived the mandatory travel permit for tourists from 22 countries, including the US and Japan, as part of efforts to attract 10 million foreign visitors in 2022. Last year, just 3.19 million tourists visited the country due to the pandemic, down from a record 17.5 million visitors in 2019. The South Korean authorities plan to reapply visa waivers for transit passengers from 34 countries, allowing them to stay for up to 30 days, while entry conditions for groups of travellers from China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia will also be eased. Discount and subsidy programmes for domestic travellers are among the other measures introduced to boost tourism.
