South Korea is expanding its tourism opportunities by introducing new visa-free policies for Chinese tourists, effective January 1, 2024. This strategic move aims to boost inbound tourism and attract more visitors to the country.
One key aspect of the new policy allows Chinese group tourists to visit Jeju Island visa-free for a stay of up to 15 days. This initiative is designed to simplify travel and make the popular island destination more accessible to groups from China.
Additionally, Chinese transit passengers at Incheon International Airport (ICN) who are heading to specific third countries can now enjoy a visa-free stay. Eligible passengers must hold a visa or a confirmed flight ticket to one of the designated third countries, which include Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. These transit passengers are permitted to stay for up to 30 days within the Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon areas, provided they depart from ICN for their onward journey to the third country. This policy aims to enhance convenience for international travelers and encourage them to explore parts of South Korea during their layover.
The South Korean government’s broader strategy also includes simplifying the general visa application process and expanding the validity of e-Visas for group tours. Furthermore, the K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) exemption for 22 countries and regions has been extended until the end of 2024. These combined efforts are part of a comprehensive plan to attract more tourists, drive economic growth, and strengthen cultural exchange. The new policies specifically target high-spending Chinese tourists and aim to facilitate a smoother travel experience for a wider range of international visitors.
