Lonsdale continued: “What a mentor. Paul knew the industry inside out, and his connections stretched across the world.
“All the great and the good of the cruise industry crossed our threshold in those early days to visit this highly respected guru, a pioneer of the modern-day cruise industry.
“And for all the years since his retirement in 1999, Paul’s wise counsel has continued to be a valuable resource within our company.”
She added that “warm” tributes have flooded since his passing on 8 February.
“Three words common to nearly all stand out,” Lonsdale said. “Firstly ‘gentleman’; in all of his doings Paul is remembered for his unfailing courtesy and kindness.
“Secondly, ‘supportive’; no matter how senior or junior the people he was dealing with, all remember Paul as offering the most considerate and personal support that he could.
“And finally, he is treasured for his mischievous sense of humour, which always ensured that meetings ended with a smile.”
Paul is survived by Judith, his wife of more than 60 years. A celebration of his life will be held soon.
