Air Canada has just bought 60,000 metric tons (20 million gallons) of neat sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Finland’s Neste to use on its flights from Vancouver International Airport. The fuel will be delivered already blended up to 50% with conventional jet fuel at Vancouver’s new South Fraser Marine Terminal before being taken by pipeline to Vancouver airport. The first shipment from Neste’s Singapore SAF plant is expected in December 2024 with more planned throughout 2025. The SAF, made from used cooking oil and tallow, offers lifecycle carbon savings of up to 80%.
