Air Canada recently held its Autism Aviation Days for another year, an initiative designed to make air travel more accessible for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. The events, which took place in Spring 2024, were hosted in collaboration with several Canadian airports and autism advocacy organizations.
The program’s primary goal is to familiarize autistic individuals with the entire air travel process in a controlled and relaxed setting. This helps to reduce the anxiety and stress often associated with navigating a busy airport environment and boarding an aircraft.
### A Simulated Travel Experience
During the Autism Aviation Days, participants and their families go through a complete, simulated pre-flight experience. This journey includes checking in for a flight, proceeding through security screening, and waiting in the gate area before boarding an Air Canada aircraft.
Once onboard, families have the opportunity to explore the cabin, meet pilots, and listen to the onboard announcements, all while the aircraft remains at the gate. This hands-on experience allows them to prepare for future travel. The events are supported by hundreds of Air Canada employees who volunteer their time to assist the families. The events this spring were held at airports in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto.
### Partnerships and Commitment to Accessibility
Air Canada’s initiative is a collaborative effort with organizations such as MagnusCards, Autism Speaks Canada, and the Canucks Autism Network. The airline also utilizes the MagnusCards app, which provides digital guides to help autistic individuals manage various daily activities, including the steps involved in air travel.
The Autism Aviation Days are part of Air Canada’s broader “Ready to Fly” program and reflect the airline’s commitment to improving accessibility. Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer at Air Canada, stated that the airline is dedicated to removing barriers and creating a more inclusive travel experience for everyone.
