Air Canada said on Wednesday that it would begin charging passengers for larger carry-on luggage.
The new rule will apply to customers carrying rollerboards, duffel bags or larger backpacks who book the airline’s lowest-priced basic fare for North American routes.
The airline will charge C$35 for the first bag and C$50 for a second. It will enforce the rule from 3 January.
But Canadian transport minister Anita Anand said she was “extremely concerned” by the announcement.
In a social media post she said: “Canadians work hard and save up to travel. They rightly expect excellent service, not extra fees.”
