The last century of science fiction film is rife with cautionary tales about tech, and almost all of them share a common theme: beware of handing over control to robots.
A recent example is the 2022 camp horror film M3GAN (pronounced Meghan), and in it that message takes on a delightfully biting, satirical twist. A toy company creates a lifelike, life-size doll meant to act as a robotic companion to a little girl. Predictably, however, it all goes wrong, and M3GAN soon turns into a hostile automaton hell-bent on attacking anyone who gets between her and her charge.
Though the film is only a couple of years old, its campiness has already taken on a sharper edge. In that short time, artificial intelligence has moved from flight of fancy to something closer to reality.
Still, the fictional tales about tech taking over the world are, at least for now, far fetched. But what happens when regular people get asked to implement AI into their day-to-day…
