Air India, has released ‘Safety Mudras’, the airline’s new inflight safety video that blends safety instructions with the kaleidoscope of India’s vibrant culture but does not mention one critical message.
Nowhere in the Air India video does it mention leaving cabin baggage behind when performing an emergency evacuation.
Developed in collaboration with Prasoon Joshi of McCann Worldgroup, Shankar Mahadevan and Bharatbala, the video is designed to engage passengers and showcase the diversity and depth of the Indian culture, while delivering essential safety information. Well, that is what the PR blurb says but the most important message is left out.

It has been proven over and again that passengers lose their lives because of the insistence of others to take their carry-on with them dramatically slowing up the escape. Evacuation standards for aircraft are built around passengers NOT taking any carry-on off with them.
To be certified an aircraft manufacturer must demonstrate that all passengers can get off in 90 seconds with half the exit doors closed and that can only be achieved if no one takes carry-on baggage with them.
The safety video will be initially accessible on Air India’s recently introduced A350 aircraft, which is equipped with state-of-the-art inflight entertainment screens. It will be progressively deployed on other aircraft in Air India’s fleet.
