In August 2020, an Air India Express flight traveling from Dubai to Kozhikode, Kerala, India, crashed upon landing at Karipur airport. The incident occurred due to heavy rain and strong winds, which caused the aircraft to skid off the runway, fall into a valley, and break into two pieces.
Mohammed Roshan, one of the 184 individuals rescued from the wreckage, recounted his harrowing experience of the crash. He described the plane touching down with a sudden jolt, followed by severe turbulence. He observed the pilot attempting to lift the aircraft again before it ultimately plummeted into the valley. Roshan was trapped by the seat in front of him, covered in glass and shards. Amidst the chaos, he helped a pregnant woman seated next to him before losing consciousness after being struck by debris.
Waking up amidst screams and fire, Roshan managed to free himself from the wreckage. He crawled out of the aircraft, observing bloodied bodies around him. Following the crash, he was taken to a local hospital, where he later discovered his spine was fractured and he had lost four teeth. His wife sustained a fractured jaw, and their child suffered burns. Roshan described the entire event as “pure chaos” and a “nightmare.” The crash claimed the lives of 19 people, including both pilots. Roshan and his family continue their recovery from their injuries and the significant trauma, which has left him with a fear of flying and difficulty sleeping.
