AIX B737-8 Diverts to Tiruchirappalli Due To Cabin Pressure Loss

An Air India Express flight bound for Bangalore carried out a diversion to Tiruchirappalli after experiencing a loss of cabin pressure on 18 May 2024.

Air India Express flight IX934, a Boeing 737-8 MAX operating from Thiruvananthapuram to Bangalore lost cabin pressure whilst on climb.

On experiencing the failure, flight crew conducted an immediate emergency descent to 10,000 feet.

Passenger oxygen masks were deployed during the incident. Having initiated the descent to save altitude, the flight crew made the decision to divert to Tiruchirappalli.

 The aircraft subsequently landed safely without further incident just over 30 minutes after terminating the client procedure.

Flight Details

Flight data shows that flight IX934 made the departure out of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) International Airport (TRV) at 1249 local time on 18 May.

The flight then set course normally and had climbed through flight level FL360 when it suffered a cabin pressurisation loss. The aircraft was in the vicinity of Bodinayakanur when it discontinued the climb.

The subsequent diversion to Tiruchirappalli was then conducted at the reduced altitude of 10,000 feet.

The aircraft did not squawk transponder code 7700 and continued the diversion under normal operating procedures.

The aircraft conducting the IX934 regional service was a Boeing 737-8 MAX, registered VT-BXA.

This is a five-year-old narrowbody aircraft belonging to the carrier air India express. It has been in operational service with the Indian carrier since September 2023.

Prior to this, it served with Shanghai Airlines following its initial delivery from the factory.
